Networking: Tips and Tricks to Network Like a Boss

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

“Networking” - we all hear about it, but what does that mean and why is it important?

In a nutshell, professional networking is taking the time to build relationships that will expand your opportunities and knowledge for the future. In a sea of hundreds, maybe thousands of applicants, networking helps you stand out!

Will networking help you find a job? Sure, this is one of the important benefits. Of equal importance, it builds confidence, grows communication and social skills, and provides a chance to learn from industry professionals.

Where should you network?

Just about anywhere! Below are some specific times when you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity to network:
  • School industry and career events or guest speakers

  • Social media, LinkedIn and other professional networks (but note that an in-person networking opportunity is always best for an initial contact whenever possible)

  • Alumni Family and friends, social events/functions

  • Current job

How do you network?

Do not be afraid to stand out. Give yourself a pep talk, be ready to discuss your interests, have a list of genuine questions in mind.

Prepare your elevator pitch. Know your value and be ready to offer advice or suggestions when given the opportunity.

Do your research. If you know who may be at an event, spend time researching their background, show interest in their area of expertise.

Be proactive. Seek out alumni and industry professionals and ask for an informational interview where you seek career advice.

Follow up. After making a new connection, follow up soon after with a thank you. This goes a long way in showing someone that you value their time.

Find reasons to connect. Maintain your network over time by scheduling informational interviews, seeking advice, sharing information, or just checking in to say hello. When you can, connect on social media, follow organizations, comment as appropriate.

Practice makes perfect!

As with anything new, networking is a skill that takes practice. It comes easier and is less intimidating with each experience.

Go forward with confidence and begin making those connections and building your networks. You never know who may be a connection to a great opportunity!
